Life & Wisdom Quote by Cesare Pavese

"Love is the cheapest of religions"

About this Quote

Pavese lands the line like a slap: love, that supposedly noble force, is also a bargain-faith, the easiest creed to join when the alternatives demand real metaphysical risk. Calling it “the cheapest of religions” doesn’t deny love’s power; it indicts the way we use it. Love becomes a substitute theology for modern people who no longer trust God, ideology, or tradition, but still need a story that justifies suffering. It’s “religion” because it asks for devotion, confession, sacrifice, and a promise of salvation. It’s “cheap” because the vows are often improvised, emotionally high-yield, and socially rewarded. You can sound profound just by being in pain for someone.

The subtext is distinctly Pavese: the suspicion that romantic intensity is not transcendence but an attempt to launder loneliness into meaning. Love offers instant metaphysics: if I’m abandoned, it was destiny; if I’m obsessive, it was passion; if I’m unhappy, it was because I “loved too much.” That’s not spiritual depth, Pavese implies, it’s a coping mechanism with good PR.

Context matters. Writing in mid-century Italy, postwar disillusionment in the air, Pavese belonged to a generation that watched grand belief-systems collapse or curdle into coercion. In that vacuum, private feeling starts doing the work public faith used to do. The quote’s sting is that it names the trap: we don’t just love people; we recruit them as gods, then resent them for failing at divinity.
