"Machines were, it may be said, the weapon employed by the capitalists to quell the revolt of specialized labor"
About this Quote
The phrase “revolt of specialized labor” is doing a lot of work. Marx is pointing to artisans and skilled tradespeople whose scarcity and know-how once gave them bargaining power: they could slow production, demand higher wages, or preserve control over the craft. Mechanization breaks that. It “deskills” production, translating judgment and technique into repeatable processes, then into machines that can be tended by cheaper, more interchangeable hands. The subtext is brutal: capital doesn’t merely respond to labor unrest with police or laws, but with redesigning work itself so unrest becomes less effective.
Context matters. Marx is writing in the shadow of early industrial Britain, where the introduction of machinery sparked riots and sabotage (the Luddite era) and where factories reorganized time, discipline, and the body. His intent is diagnostic, not nostalgic: the machine is a lever that shifts the balance of power, making dependence structural. Progress, in this view, is real but captured; innovation becomes an instrument to “quell” not just wages, but autonomy, turning a conflict over dignity and control into a problem of engineering.
