Politics & Power Quote by Tony Snow

"Many people don't give a rip about politics and know as much about public affairs as they know about the topography of Pluto"

About this Quote

Snow’s line lands like a slap because it’s dressed up as a joke. “Don’t give a rip” is barroom plainspoken, the kind of phrase that refuses to flatter the audience. Then he spikes it with “topography of Pluto,” an image that’s both absurd and surgically chosen: Pluto is remote, mysterious, and (in Snow’s lifetime) newly reclassified, a symbol of how easily “important” knowledge can drift out of focus. The laugh comes from the comparison; the sting comes from how plausible it feels.

The intent isn’t just to scold apathy. It’s to shame a particular kind of civic consumerism: people who live inside a modern media ecosystem yet treat politics as a distant planet, something that occasionally flickers into view as spectacle, scandal, or election-night theater. Snow, as a journalist, is aiming his barb at the gap between stakes and attention. Public affairs decide taxes, war, rights, schools; Pluto decides nothing. That mismatch is the whole point.

There’s subtext, too, about the press and the public in a feedback loop. If citizens are that disengaged, journalists can either translate complexity into usable information or chase whatever keeps eyes on the screen. Snow’s cynicism implies he’s seen the consequences of the latter: a public trained to recognize personalities and slogans but not mechanisms, budgets, or tradeoffs.

Context matters: Snow worked in the age of cable news acceleration and partisan branding, before “low-information voters” became a tired trope. The line anticipates today’s attention economy, where ignorance isn’t just a failure of duty; it’s a business model.
