Medicine, Paracelsus insists, is a kind of informed trespass: you do not simply tinker with symptoms, you step into life itself. The line is doing two jobs at once. It elevates medicine above the era's prevailing marketplace of remedies and “plasters” - the transactional, craft-guild notion of healing as a set of recipes. At the same time, it reprimands any clinician tempted to treat the body like a passive container for drugs. “Not only a science; it is also an art” isn’t soft romanticism; it’s a power claim. Art here means judgment under uncertainty: reading a singular patient, timing an intervention, weighing tradeoffs no formula can settle.

Context matters. Paracelsus wrote in a Europe where Galenic authority still dominated universities, barber-surgeons and apothecaries divided labor, and medical prestige often outpaced medical effectiveness. By framing medicine as engagement with “the very processes of life,” he nudges the field toward mechanisms rather than doctrines - an early modern push toward physiology, chemistry, and observation, against inherited dogma. The subtext: if you don’t understand how life works, your “cures” are superstition with good branding.

The final clause is the tell: “understood before they may be guided.” It draws an ethical boundary around ambition. Guidance implies humility and limits; you can steer, not command. In an age of bloodletting certainty and charismatic quackery, Paracelsus offers a bracing corrective: authority must be earned by comprehension, and care is a practice of discernment, not just technique.
