"Mistakes are a fact of life. It is the response to the error that counts"
About this Quote
The phrasing matters. “Response” is broader than “apology” or “fix.” It includes accountability, repair, learning, and the decision not to repeat harm. It also includes refusal: denial, doubling down, blaming the system while benefiting from it. Giovanni’s subtext is that character is revealed in the aftermath, when you don’t have the excuse of surprise. If you can’t avoid being wrong, you can still choose what kind of person you become when wrongness arrives.
In the cultural context Giovanni writes from - Black America’s long exposure to scrutiny, policing, and the demand to be “twice as good” - the quote reads as liberation and warning at once. Liberation, because it punctures the punitive idea that a single misstep should define you. Warning, because it doesn’t let anyone hide behind inevitability. Mistakes are common; responsibility is not. The line works because it’s both tender and unsentimental: grace without absolution, realism without resignation.

Evidence: Mistakes are a fact of life It is the response to error that counts (Poem: "Of Liberation" (page number not verifiable from accessible primary scan)). The line appears within Nikki Giovanni’s poem "Of Liberation". A reliable text witness is visible in a digitized copy of her later compilation The Collected Poetry of Nikki Giovanni: 1968–1998, where the line appears exactly as two consecutive lines (with "response to error", no "the" before error). The earliest mainstream book publication for "Of Liberation" is her collection Black Feeling, Black Talk, Black Judgement (William Morrow, 1970). Some secondary sources claim 1968 due to the poems’ earlier self-published circulation, but I did not find a verifiable 1968 primary scan showing this exact line. The commonly-circulated variant with a period/comma and "the error" ("It is the response to the error that counts") appears to be a later paraphrase/punctuation/wording variant used by quote websites and articles.
