"Most films I work on, the people making the film are constantly second-guessing the executives of the studio, the producer, and the audience. It is very hard to accomplish anything in that situation"
About this Quote
Burwell’s phrasing is telling. “Constantly second-guessing” isn’t critique or collaboration; it’s anticipatory obedience. The subtext is less “studios interfere” and more “fear has become workflow.” That fear metastasizes because film is an expensive medium. When stakes are high, people reach for consensus as insurance, and consensus is a solvent: it dissolves specificity. For a composer, that means music becomes the last lever to “fix” a film’s perceived risks - making a scene funnier, sadder, faster, safer - without changing a frame. If everyone is anxious about how it will play, the score is asked to flatter an imaginary version of the movie.
The kicker is Burwell’s modest ending: “It is very hard to accomplish anything.” He doesn’t say it’s impossible; he says the conditions make accomplishment unlikely. That restraint carries its own bite. The problem isn’t talent, or even interference. It’s the culture of preemptive appeasement that turns bold choices into liabilities and, eventually, into nothing worth choosing at all.
