"My death will be caused by morphine, which I have deliberately taken with suicidal intent"
About this Quote
As a politician, Campbell’s line carries an added layer of institutional accusation. Public life trains people to speak in deniable half-truths; this is the opposite, a refusal to grant the state or the media any interpretive wiggle room. It’s also a form of control: the speaker can’t control what happens next, but can control the record. The subtext is both intimate and political: if you are looking for a scandal, a conspiracy, a heroic narrative, look elsewhere. This is agency asserted at the bleakest edge of agency, written to outlast gossip and to force the public to confront suicide without the comforting alibis.
