Justice & Law Quote by Hans Frank

"My first endeavor was to save the core of the German system of justice: the independent judiciary"

About this Quote

A line like this tries to launder a career in criminal governance through the language of institutional virtue. Hans Frank, Hitler's one-time legal architect and later Governor-General of occupied Poland, reaches for the most sacred phrase in any liberal legal order: "independent judiciary". It's a claim designed to sound like resistance without actually describing any act of resistance. "My first endeavor" frames him as a conscientious professional who entered the Nazi project with procedural scruples, not ideological zeal. The word "core" is doing heavy work, too: it suggests a stable, honorable tradition under threat, positioning Frank as its steward rather than one of its chief corrupters.

The subtext is defensive and retroactive. Frank is not speaking to a German public debating constitutional design; he's speaking to history, and likely to a courtroom. The rhetorical move is classic post-collapse self-exculpation: emphasize the abstract machinery of justice while omitting what that machinery was used to do, and what he personally enabled. In occupied Poland, "justice" became an instrument of terror, expropriation, and racial hierarchy; courts and legal codes were bent to make domination look administratively clean. Invoking an "independent judiciary" under a totalitarian regime is almost a category error, but that's the point: it invites the listener to grade him on a civics quiz instead of a ledger of crimes.

The line works because it mimics the moral prestige of the rule of law while quietly redefining law as a professional aesthetic. Independence becomes a talking point, not a safeguard, and conscience is staged as bureaucracy.
