Politics & Power Quote by Simon Bolivar

"Nations will march towards the apex of their greatness at the same pace as their education. Nations will soar if their education soars; they will regress if it regresses. Nations will fall and sink in darkness if education is corrupted or completely abandoned"

About this Quote

Bolivar ties the fate of a nation to something more mundane than banners and battlefields: the classroom. Coming from a leader who spent his life gambling on revolutions, it is a deliberately bracing demotion of military glory. Independence, he implies, is not the end of history; it is the opening act. The real fight is what happens after the parade, when a newborn republic has to manufacture citizens out of subjects.

The rhetoric works because it turns education into a national barometer and a moral throttle. “Apex,” “soar,” “sink in darkness” aren’t neutral verbs; they’re pressure tactics. Bolivar is not praising literacy as self-improvement. He’s warning elites and would-be strongmen that ignorance is the easiest raw material for tyranny. “Corrupted” is the key word: he’s not only worried about a lack of schools, but about schooling that becomes propaganda, patronage, or clerical chokehold. In other words, bad education is worse than none because it trains obedience while pretending to train reason.

Context sharpens the urgency. Bolivar’s liberated territories were fractured by class hierarchy, regional rivalries, and the inherited machinery of colonial rule. His fear wasn’t simply Spanish return; it was internal collapse: caudillos, factionalism, and a public shut out from the skills needed to sustain republican institutions. The subtext is almost prosecutorial: if the republic fails, don’t blame fate or foreigners. Look at who starved the schools, who twisted curricula, who benefited from “darkness.”
