Daily Inspiration Quote by Augustus Baldwin Longstreet

"Ned made a tremendous rattling, at which Bullet took fright, broke his bridle, and dashed off in grand style; and would have stopped all farther negotiations by going home in disgust, had not a traveller arrested him and brought him back; but Kit did not move"

About this Quote

Chaos is doing its little jig, and the sentence wants you to hear every clatter of it. Longstreet builds a comic chain reaction: Ned makes a “tremendous rattling,” Bullet (the horse, and already a joke in name alone) panics, snaps the bridle, and “dashed off in grand style.” That last phrase is the tell. “Grand style” doesn’t elevate the moment; it mocks it, dressing animal terror in the costume of aristocratic swagger. The humor comes from that mismatch: high diction stapled to low circumstance, a frontier slapstick made to sound like courtly drama.

The subtext is about control - or the illusion of it. “Negotiations” is a wonderfully bureaucratic word to apply to a scene that’s basically rural bedlam. It hints at social bargaining happening offstage: men posturing, reputations at stake, maybe a deal or confrontation that’s supposed to proceed according to recognizable rules. Bullet nearly “stopped all farther negotiations by going home in disgust,” as if the horse has opinions about etiquette and can veto the proceedings. The traveler who intercepts him functions like a roaming agent of order, temporarily restoring the possibility of civility.

Then the punchline lands: “but Kit did not move.” After all that motion and noise, immobility becomes character revelation. Kit’s stillness reads as stubbornness, stoicism, or quiet defiance - a human (or possibly another animal) refusing to be swept up in the performance. Longstreet, the lawyer-storyteller, understands how quickly “serious” business turns into farce, and how comedy exposes the pecking order: who bolts, who chases, who intervenes, who simply refuses to budge.
