"Now that I've got some films under my belt, I have the courage of my convictions regarding acting. It gives me a leg to stand on"
About this Quote
The second sentence lands the point with a pun that doubles as a power move. “A leg to stand on” is a phrase about argument and legitimacy, but coming from an actor it also winks at the physicality of the job and the way performers are judged: posture, presence, how you hold the frame. Sorvino is threading two anxieties at once: the imposter-syndrome fear of not deserving a strong opinion, and the industry’s habit of treating opinions as negotiable until you’ve been “proven” by the market.
The context matters. Sorvino broke out in the mid-90s, in an era when indie credibility and awards could suddenly grant an actor leverage, especially a young woman expected to be agreeable, not authoritative. The subtext isn’t “I’m finally good,” it’s “I’m finally allowed.” She’s describing how artistic confidence gets built out of repetition and risk, but also how gatekeeping works: the work becomes the permission slip.
