Daily Inspiration Quote by Janet Street-Porter

"Obviously, I've spent most of my working life with men and they have this way of operating, which seems a bit alien to me"

About this Quote

There is a sly double move in Street-Porter’s “Obviously”: it pretends the point is self-evident while quietly staking out authority. She’s not confessing ignorance about men; she’s documenting a long exposure to male-coded workplaces and naming the culture as something that can be studied from the outside. That “working life” does a lot of work: it frames gender difference not as romance or personal drama but as professional infrastructure - the daily rituals of meetings, gatekeeping, alliances, competition, banter, and who gets heard.

The phrase “this way of operating” is clinical on purpose. It strips “men” of individuality and points to systems, habits, and incentives. She’s describing a mode: transactional, hierarchical, performative, sometimes emotionally armoured. By calling it “a bit alien,” she lands a subtle insult that’s also self-protection. Alien doesn’t mean “bad,” but it implies a foreign logic you’re forced to navigate, translate, and survive inside. “A bit” softens the blow, the classic British hedge that lets you say something sharp without triggering immediate defensiveness.

The subtext is workplace asymmetry: she’s had to adapt to norms she didn’t design, and the adaptation itself becomes a credential. Coming from a journalist whose career spans eras when newsrooms were aggressively masculine, the line reads as both reportage and critique. It’s the voice of someone who’s been in the room, watched the rules being made, and is done pretending the rules are neutral.
