This quote by Stendhal speaks with the value of relationships and interactions with others in the advancement of one's character. Character is something that is built over time, through experiences and interactions with others. It is not something that can be obtained in solitude. Solitude can offer a space for reflection and self-questioning, however it can not offer the experiences and relationships necessary to build character. Character is formed through the relationships we have with others, through the discussions we have, and through the experiences we share. It is through these interactions that we find out how to communicate with others, how to be caring, and how to be understanding. Solitude can provide an area for self-reflection and development, but it can not offer the experiences and relationships needed to build character.
