Education Quote by Jeremy Piven

"One of the great things that you should never do, that I learned from John Malkovich, is to never judge your characters"

About this Quote

Piven’s sentence is a small mess of stutters and doubles-back, and that’s part of the tell: he’s talking about an acting rule that only really makes sense once you’ve watched yourself mess it up. “One of the great things that you should never do” is clunky, but it captures the muscle memory of a note you’ve been given a hundred times. The point lands cleanly anyway: don’t judge the character.

The intent is practical, not philosophical. Piven is describing a technique for getting performances that feel lived-in rather than “performed.” Judging a character usually means playing the verdict instead of the person: telegraphing that someone is pathetic, immoral, ridiculous, broken. That moves the actor outside the character, into a supervisory role where the audience is nudged toward the “correct” interpretation. It can look like contempt, or smugness, or a kind of moral italics.

The subtext is also defensive in a smart way. Piven’s best-known work (Ari Gold, for many viewers) is full of behavior that could easily curdle into cartoon villainy. “Never judge” isn’t an absolution; it’s a permission slip to search for the character’s internal logic without wincing. Even monsters believe they’re managing, surviving, loving, winning.

Dropping John Malkovich’s name matters as context. Malkovich is an actor associated with unnerving specificity and zero pandering. Invoking him frames this as craft lineage: a reminder that the hardest part of acting isn’t showing us what’s wrong with someone, it’s refusing the easy superiority of being right about them.
