It’s the collapse of distinctions into a mush where nothing risks being itself.

The intent is polemical: art decays when it forgets what its forms can uniquely do. Film, for Godard, isn’t just filmed theater, illustrated literature, or photographed painting. It’s a medium with its own ethics and syntax: the cut, the glance, the ellipsis, the political charge of what’s shown and what’s withheld. The subtext is also a critique of consumer culture’s appetite for “content” over craft. Godard came out of a moment (postwar France, the Nouvelle Vague) that treated form as ideology. If form collapses, so does the capacity to resist.
