Daily Inspiration Quote by Pauline Kael

"One of the surest signs of the Philistine is his reverence for the superior tastes of those who put him down"

About this Quote

Kael skewers a particular kind of cultural self-sabotage: the person who gets insulted by elites and then treats the insulters' preferences as holy writ. Her target isn't simply "bad taste". It's deference masquerading as aspiration, the Philistine who confuses humiliation with education and ends up policing his own pleasure on behalf of people who barely respect him.

The bite in "reverence" is doing most of the work. Reverence is religious language, and Kael frames aesthetic hierarchy as a faith system: there are saints of refinement, there is heresy (liking the wrong movies), and there is a congregation eager to atone. The "surest signs" phrasing reads like a diagnostic test, the critic as clinician spotting an illness of status anxiety. And the twist is that the Philistine isn't defined by ignorance but by obedience. He doesn't lack culture; he submits to it.

Context matters: Kael wrote in a mid-century America where highbrow gatekeeping and mass entertainment were locked in a constant knife fight, and where film was still scrambling for legitimacy. She distrusted pieties - both the museum hush around "serious" art and the smug superiority that came with it. The quote is less a defense of popular culture than an attack on the social theater of taste, where people borrow opinions to borrow prestige. Kael is warning that the quickest way to become tasteless is to treat taste as a ladder instead of a sense.
