"One thing I can tell you is this: that I am not a methodical writer"
About this Quote
The phrasing matters. “One thing I can tell you is this” is conversational, almost defensive, as if he’s answering an interviewer who wants a neat account of process. He gives them the opposite: a boundary. The subtext is: don’t mistake my refusal to systematize for a lack of rigor. “Methodical” is a loaded word in literary culture, often coded as disciplined, Western, and properly professional. Soyinka, writing out of Nigeria’s colonial aftermath and into decades shaped by censorship, imprisonment, and political confrontation, knows how “method” can become another demand to be legible on someone else’s terms.
The line also protects the work from being reduced to a recipe. If your craft is myth, satire, Yoruba cosmology, and contemporary power struggles braided together, strict method can be a cage. Soyinka’s intent is to keep creation closer to lived reality: fractured, improvisational, stubbornly untrackable. It’s a warning against fetishizing process and a reminder that artistic authority can come from resisting the interview-friendly narrative of how genius is made.
