"One way of looking at speech is to say it is a constant stratagem to cover nakedness"
About this Quote
“Nakedness” lands with the right kind of ambiguity for a playwright who built entire careers out of what people won’t say. It’s literal vulnerability - the exposed body, the unguarded self - but also the naked fact: desire, fear, guilt, need. Pinter suggests we speak not to reveal but to manage exposure. Conversation becomes clothing: layered, adjusted, sometimes deliberately ill-fitting so no one notices what’s underneath. Even sincerity can be a costume, another way to control how we’re seen.
The line sits comfortably inside the Pinteresque universe where pauses are weapons and banal dialogue is a pressure system. His characters talk around the point because the point is dangerous. Threat often arrives disguised as courtesy; domination wears the mask of small talk. In that context, speech isn’t the opposite of silence. Silence is simply one more option in the arsenal, sometimes the most aggressive one.
There’s a cynical comedy here, too: humans as animals frantically improvising outfits out of words. Pinter’s sting is that the performance rarely stops, because exposure isn’t a momentary risk - it’s the underlying condition.
