Daily Inspiration Quote by Oscar Wilde

"Our ambition should be to rule ourselves, the true kingdom for each one of us; and true progress is to know more, and be more, and to do more"

About this Quote

Wilde frames self-rule as monarchy, then quietly sabotages monarchy by relocating it inside the individual. "The true kingdom for each one of us" flatters the reader with sovereign status while making a sharper demand: if you want power, earn it in the only jurisdiction you can legitimately govern. Coming from a writer who skewered public morality and performed his own persona as art, the line doubles as a critique of Victorian obsession with status. External authority, inherited rank, even social respectability become cheap imitations of the harder work of self-command.

The sentence is engineered as an ethical rebrand. "Ambition" typically points outward - conquest, career, acclaim - but Wilde redirects it inward without sounding pious. He uses the language of empire ("rule", "kingdom") to sell restraint as glamour. The subtext is distinctly Wildean: self-mastery is not dour self-denial but a more refined, more aesthetic form of power. Governing oneself is presented as a kind of aristocracy of character, accessible to anyone willing to cultivate it.

Then he smuggles in a modern idea of progress: not GDP or industrial output, but expansion of mind and capacity. "To know more, and be more, and to do more" climbs in three steps - cognition, identity, action - a neat ladder that insists knowledge should transform the self and spill into behavior. It’s a rebuke to the Victorian habit of treating education as ornament. For Wilde, progress isn’t the machine getting faster; it’s the person getting larger.
