Daily Inspiration Quote by Burt Ward

"Our characters were antiseptic but we weren't. And if you remember what we did on BATMAN, as the scripts were written very funny, we played them very straight"

About this Quote

“Antiseptic” is a slyly polite way to describe the 1960s Batman persona: clean-cut, morally unambiguous, scrubbed of any mess that might scare sponsors. Burt Ward’s punchline is that the people inside those spotless suits weren’t nearly as sanitized. He’s hinting at the lived reality of a pop machine that demanded bright primary colors and civic virtue on-camera while its cast and crew were still human off it: hungry, flirtatious, exhausted, bored, ambitious. The gap between the brand and the body is the point.

The second line is the real craft note, and it’s why the show still plays. “Very funny” scripts performed “very straight” is comedy’s oldest magic trick: never wink at the joke. Ward is describing a deliberate refusal to undercut the material with self-awareness. Adam West’s granite sincerity and Ward’s earnest amazement turn absurdity into something oddly credible, which lets the audience laugh without the show begging for laughs. It’s deadpan as a moral stance.

Context matters: Batman (1966-68) was camp on network television, released into an America balancing postwar wholesomeness with the first big waves of counterculture. Ward’s quote reveals the tightrope. The characters had to be “antiseptic” enough for family-hour TV, but the performances had to be serious enough to give the camp structure. That straight-faced commitment becomes a kind of rebellion: not against the censors, but against cynicism. The joke lands because they never admit it’s a joke.
