Daily Inspiration Quote by Fritz Perls

"Our dependency makes slaves out of us, especially if this dependency is a dependency of our self-esteem. If you need encouragement, praise, pats on the back from everybody, then you make everybody your judge"

About this Quote

Perls is doing what he does best: turning a comforting social norm into a trap you can suddenly see. The line starts with a provocative reframe - dependency as slavery - then tightens the vise by specifying the most intimate kind: dependency of self-esteem. Not money, not love, not even approval in general, but the internal scoreboard that decides whether you get to feel like a person today. That specificity is the hook; it forces readers to admit the problem isn’t “other people,” it’s the outsourcing of your own self-regard.

The second sentence is pure Gestalt provocation. Perls doesn’t moralize about vanity; he points to the power structure created by constant reassurance-seeking. If your emotional stability requires applause, then everyone becomes a potential parole board. “Judge” lands hard because it exposes the hidden contract: you perform, they evaluate, you adjust. It’s not community, it’s governance.

Context matters. Perls, as the founder of Gestalt therapy, pushed personal responsibility, present-moment awareness, and the move from external validation to internal contact. In mid-century therapeutic culture, his stance was deliberately anti-coddling, suspicious of excuses and dependency dressed up as “support.” Read now, it also prefigures our attention economy: likes and replies as micro-verdicts, identity as something crowdsourced.

The subtext isn’t “never need anyone.” It’s “notice the price of needing everyone.” Encouragement can be nourishment; requiring it as proof of worth is how you hand your autonomy to the room.
