"Our point of view is we will sell more if we help people make purchasing decisions"
About this Quote
That was Amazon’s great cultural innovation. Retail used to be organized around persuasion in the blunt sense - placement, promotions, salesmanship. Bezos pushes a cooler, more technocratic ideal: information as a sales tool. Reviews, recommendations, comparison features, frictionless search, "customers also bought" - all of it presents itself as assistance. The genius is that it often is assistance. Amazon became powerful not by hiding its interest, but by aligning it with user convenience so effectively that the distinction began to blur.
The subtext is a very Silicon Valley belief that trust can be engineered. If consumers feel informed rather than manipulated, they buy more and come back. That sounds benign, even enlightened, but it also expands corporate influence. The company that "helps" you decide is also the company curating your options, ranking your attention, and learning your habits.
So the quote is neither cynical confession nor altruistic credo. It is a compact expression of platform capitalism at its most persuasive: customer obsession not as moral virtue, but as an extraordinarily efficient route to dominance.
