"Pain was something we were expected to endure. But I doubt very much if you would be entirely happy today if a doctor threw a towel in your face and jumped on you with a knife"
About this Quote
The intent isn’t to argue that pain is uniquely terrible now; it’s to expose how selective nostalgia can be. People romanticize past toughness because it flatters them. Dahl punctures that self-congratulation by forcing the reader to imagine a situation where toughness would be indistinguishable from malpractice. In other words: we don’t actually miss hardship, we miss the narrative control we get by calling it “hardship” instead of “harm.”
The subtext is also about trust. Medicine is supposed to be the sanctuary of expertise and care; Dahl corrupts it on purpose to show how fragile our tolerance becomes when authority feels arbitrary or violent. There’s a child’s-eye fury under the joke, the sense that adults rename cruelty as discipline and expect applause for surviving it. Dahl’s cynicism lands because it’s funny, and it’s funny because it’s true: nobody’s principles about toughness survive contact with a blade.
