"Passion is universal humanity. Without it religion, history, romance and art would be useless"
About this Quote
The barb is in the second sentence. Religion, history, romance, art: pillars of meaning that often present themselves as elevated, even transcendent. Balzac punctures that self-seriousness by calling them “useless” without passion. Not wrong or false, just inert. He’s arguing that these systems don’t matter because they contain truth; they matter because they contain heat. Strip out desire, jealousy, ambition, grief, longing and what’s left is documentation, etiquette, ornament.
Context does a lot of work here. Balzac’s novels are crowded with strivers, lovers, debtors, social climbers; in Restoration France, money and status are the new theology, and passion is how you watch the soul get bargained, sold, or redeemed. The subtext: culture is not a museum of ideals but a record of appetites. Passion is also democratic in his view, but not necessarily noble. It elevates art and fuels romance, yes; it also births fanaticism, vendettas, and historical catastrophe. That tension is exactly why the line works: it flatters our need for meaning while reminding us that meaning is powered by the messiest parts of us.
