Daily Inspiration Quote by Thomas Szasz

"People often say that this or that person has not yet found himself. But the self is not something one finds, it is something one creates"

About this Quote

The line cuts against a whole industry of self-discovery that treats identity like a lost set of keys: misplaced, recoverable, waiting somewhere under the couch. Szasz, a famously combative critic of institutional psychiatry, swaps the comforting metaphor of “finding yourself” for a harder, almost defiant ethic of authorship. The verb choice matters. “Finds” implies a prepackaged essence and, conveniently, an expert who can help locate it. “Creates” implies responsibility, improvisation, and the possibility of failure without the alibi of fate.

The subtext is a critique of therapeutic culture’s tendency to reframe moral and social conflict as diagnosis. If the self is something you “find,” then your distress can be treated as a technical problem: you’re obstructed, repressed, misaligned, in need of corrective intervention. If the self is something you “create,” then the work looks less like excavation and more like decision-making: what you commit to, what you refuse, what stories you stop telling about your own helplessness.

Szasz’s context sharpens the provocation. He argued that “mental illness” is often a label that turns deviance, suffering, or nonconformity into a medical matter, granting institutions authority over private life. This sentence is his pocket-size counterspell. It doesn’t deny pain; it denies the romance of an inner “true self” that absolves you from choice. It’s bracing because it offers no hidden core to rescue you, only the unnerving freedom to build a person out of acts, habits, and consequences.
