The target isn’t free inquiry itself; it’s a mind that consumes ideas the way a crowd consumes slogans - quickly, performatively, without the patience to metabolize them into judgment.

The line “no hold over their process of thinking” frames thinking as a craft, not a vibe. “Hold” implies grip, technique, self-command: the ability to test motives, check impulses, resist the dopamine hit of certainty. When that hold is missing, “liberty” becomes another temptation, not an emancipation. The subtext is a critique of modernity’s noise - the seductive buffet of ideologies, fashions, and pseudo-rational justifications that let desire masquerade as principle.

His most controversial move is the animal metaphor. It’s not a biological insult so much as a moral diagnosis: immature thought, untrained by reflection and responsibility, collapses into appetite, tribal reflex, and domination. In Iqbal’s era - late colonial India, rising mass politics, communal anxieties, Western intellectual imports colliding with older ethical frameworks - the fear was that “modern” freedom could produce not enlightened citizens but manipulable crowds.

As a poet-philosopher, Iqbal is also staking a spiritual claim: real freedom is not the absence of constraints but the presence of a higher self that can govern the lower one. Liberty, in his view, is a tool. If you hand it to an unformed mind, it doesn’t open a horizon; it opens a cage.
