There's also a quiet provocation here: investors who fixate on percentages may be misunderstanding the economics of platforms and scale businesses altogether.

That doesn't make the claim universally true. Percentage margins still matter as a signal of pricing power and operational discipline. But Bezos isn't offering a textbook definition of value. He's making a strategic argument on behalf of empire-sized businesses, where the real story is not how finely the pie is sliced, but how huge the pie has become.
