"Physics investigates the essential nature of the world, and biology describes a local bump. Psychology, human psychology, describes a bump on the bump"
About this Quote
The intent isn’t to sneer at psychology so much as to locate it. Quine spent his career pushing against the idea that any discipline gets a privileged, foundation-laying vantage point. His naturalism treats humans as part of nature, not judges over it; his anti-Cartesian streak distrusts a mind that pretends to be more basic than the world it inhabits. Calling psychology a bump-on-a-bump dramatizes the nested dependence: mental life rides on biological hardware, which rides on physical law. No ghosts in the machine, just increasingly specialized descriptions.
The subtext is methodological, even political in academia terms: if you want certainty, don’t go looking for it in introspection or folk categories like “belief” and “desire.” Quine is also gesturing at scale and contingency: what we take as central (the mind, the self, the story we tell about our choices) is, from a colder angle, a localized phenomenon with limited jurisdiction. It’s funny because it’s true, and unsettling because it implies our most intimate explanations are also the least cosmically important.
