"Pop music allows you to be who you are without having to wear a social uniform or to conform, which some people find impossible to do"
About this Quote
The intent isn't to crown pop as inherently radical; it's to point out how it functions for listeners and performers who can't, or won't, "conform". That last clause is the tell. Fahey isn't talking about mild nonconformity - the kind you can toggle off at work. She's talking about the people for whom fitting in is not just unpleasant but structurally unavailable: the queer kid, the awkward girl, the boy who doesn't perform masculinity correctly, the person whose body or accent or desire makes the "uniform" itch and never sit right.
"Social uniform" is a deliberately plain metaphor, which makes it sting. Uniforms promise safety and belonging, but they also demand compliance, and pop has always been a place where performance flips that script. You get to try on identities the world forbids, then call it fandom. You get to sing along and, for three minutes, live in a body that's yours. Fahey's subtext is generous and slightly defiant: if society makes authenticity costly, pop lowers the price - not by erasing norms, but by giving you cover to ignore them.
