Faith & Spirit Quote by Jane Grey

"Pray God in the bowels of his mercy to send you his Holy Spirit; for he hath given you his great gift of utterance, if it pleased him also to open the eyes of your heart"

About this Quote

Jane Grey writes like someone who knows the scaffold is closer than the next season. The line opens with a plea that sounds deferential enough for a Tudor court, then quietly turns into a spiritual cross-examination. “Pray God in the bowels of his mercy” isn’t decorative piety; it’s visceral language meant to disarm. Mercy is imagined as something bodily, intimate, almost maternal - a strategic softening before the blade.

Then comes the pivot: “he hath given you his great gift of utterance.” Grey flatters her target’s eloquence, but the compliment is a trap. Utterance is only sound unless God “open the eyes of your heart.” In one move she splits rhetoric from truth, performance from conviction. The subtext is pointed: you may speak brilliantly, even persuasively, but you are still spiritually blind. It’s an indictment that can pass as a blessing, which is exactly what a young royal, surrounded by enemies and theology, would need - a weapon that looks like a prayer.

Context makes the intent sharper. Grey, the nine-days queen, became a Protestant martyr figure after Mary I’s restoration of Catholic power. Her letters and statements often read as earnest devotion, but they also function as resistance: a final attempt to claim moral authority when political authority has been stripped. The sentence weaponizes the era’s central anxiety - salvation - and aims it at an opponent who likely wielded words (and doctrine) as a tool of state. Grey’s last refuge is to imply: God has given you language; I’m asking Him to give you conscience.
