"Prayer holds together the shattered fragments of the creation. It makes history possible!"
About this Quote
The second sentence is the dagger: “It makes history possible.” Ellul is quietly attacking the modern fantasy that history is produced by technique, planning, and political will. In his broader work, “technique” is the system that turns everything - people, nature, time - into manageable objects. That system generates motion, not meaning. Prayer becomes a counter-technology: an act that reorders attention away from control and toward relation, dependence, and moral orientation. It’s not that prayer causes events like a lever; it makes human action intelligible, accountable, and therefore genuinely historical rather than merely mechanical.
The subtext is anti-triumphalist. Prayer “holds together” what we cannot repair ourselves; it doesn’t claim we can rebuild Eden by policy or progress. Written by a French Protestant who lived through world war and the seductions of propaganda, the quote reads as a rebuke to both political messianism and spiritual escapism. Prayer is presented as the thin, stubborn thread that keeps time from collapsing into noise.
