War & Peace Quote by Lionel Trilling

"Probably it is impossible for humor to be ever a revolutionary weapon. Candide can do little more than generate irony"

About this Quote

Trilling is throwing cold water on the romantic fantasy that a good joke can topple a regime. In his hands, humor isn’t the Molotov cocktail of culture; it’s closer to an antiseptic. It cleans illusions off a situation without necessarily treating the disease. That’s why he reaches for Candide, Voltaire’s masterpiece of comic cruelty: the book detonates optimism, punctures authority, and leaves you laughing at the rubble. But the laughter, Trilling implies, mostly reorganizes consciousness rather than power. Irony becomes the end state, not the engine of change.

The intent is diagnostic, almost disciplinary. Trilling, a mid-century critic watching politics harden into ideologies, is wary of confusing mental sophistication with historical action. Candide trains readers to see through slogans and metaphysics; it makes certainty look ridiculous. Yet that very skill can curdle into a pose: the enlightened spectator who can’t be surprised, can’t be recruited, can’t commit. Irony, in other words, is a solvent. Solvents dissolve bonds.

The subtext cuts at liberal self-congratulation. If your primary political tool is wit, you may end up with what Trilling fears: a culture of cleverness that excels at negation and falters at building. Humor can humiliate the powerful, but it can also anesthetize the audience, turning outrage into knowing chuckles.

Context matters: writing in a century of propaganda and mass politics, Trilling is asking whether satire can compete with movements. His answer is bracingly unglamorous: humor can make the world look strange; it rarely makes the world move.
