Trilling is throwing cold water on the romantic fantasy that a good joke can topple a regime. In his hands, humor isn’t the Molotov cocktail of culture; it’s closer to an antiseptic. It cleans illusions off a situation without necessarily treating the disease. That’s why he reaches for Candide, Voltaire’s masterpiece of comic cruelty: the book detonates optimism, punctures authority, and leaves you laughing at the rubble. But the laughter, Trilling implies, mostly reorganizes consciousness rather than power. Irony becomes the end state, not the engine of change.
