War & Peace Quote by Jean Anouilh

"Propaganda is a soft weapon; hold it in your hands too long, and it will move about like a snake, and strike the other way"

About this Quote

Propaganda, Anouilh suggests, is the kind of tool that flatters its user with a sense of control right up until it starts controlling them. Calling it a "soft weapon" is the first sleight of hand: it sounds bloodless, almost humane, the opposite of brute force. But softness here is not gentleness; its danger is precisely that it can be handled casually, passed around, used in polite company. You can live with it. You can start to like it.

Then he turns the metaphor, and the sentence becomes a little stage scene. Propaganda "in your hands" implies intimacy and ownership: you think you're the one directing the message, shaping the crowd, managing the narrative. But "hold it... too long" hints at moral erosion and institutional addiction. Once you rely on propaganda to govern, to win, to justify, you can't stop without exposing how much of your authority is made of air.

The snake image does the real work. Snakes don't just bite; they slip, they surprise, they operate on instinct. Propaganda behaves the same way because it requires simplification, repetition, and emotional leverage. Those habits don't stay neatly aimed at enemies; they seep into the hand that wields them. The propagandist starts believing their own slogans, then designing policy around them, then punishing anyone who complicates them. In Anouilh's 20th-century Europe, that isn't abstract: a playwright who lived through occupation-era moral compromises knew how quickly "necessary" messaging becomes a system of self-deception. The sting is cynical and theatrical: the weapon strikes "the other way" because it was never really obedient.
