Prosperity, Plutarch warns, is a rigged instrument: it flatters everyone’s virtue by making virtue easy. When life is smooth, friendship becomes cheap to perform. People can be generous because it costs little; they can be loyal because loyalty isn’t tested; they can look wise because nothing demands hard choices. Calling prosperity “no just scale” is a quietly corrosive move. It suggests that comfort doesn’t merely fail to measure character; it actively distorts it, like a faulty marketplace where counterfeit coins circulate undetected.

The second clause sharpens the knife. Adversity is “the only balance” because it introduces weight: risk, inconvenience, reputational cost, real sacrifice. Friends are “weighed” not in sentiment but in what they’ll bear alongside you. Plutarch’s subtext isn’t simply that hard times reveal who stays; it’s that hardship is the only environment where friendship becomes legible. The moral economy changes: attention is scarce, help has a price, and time given to you is time taken from something else. Under pressure, motives stop hiding behind good manners.

Context matters here. Plutarch, writing in a world of patronage, status, and shifting political fortunes under Rome, knew how quickly alliances formed around success and how quickly they evaporated when the spotlight moved. The line is also a jab at self-deception: prosperity doesn’t just attract false friends; it makes us misread them because we want the crowd to mean something. Adversity, unsentimental and exacting, forces a truer accounting.
