Aging & Wisdom Quote by Francis Bacon

"Prosperity is the blessing of the Old Testament; adversity is the blessing of the New"

About this Quote

Bacon’s line flatters the successful and scolds them in the same breath. It borrows the Bible’s cultural authority to stage a moral accounting: the Old Testament, in a popular early-modern reading, rewards the faithful with land, heirs, and victory; the New Testament sanctifies the bruised and dispossessed. The genius is the hinge word “blessing,” which doesn’t just mean “good thing” but “divine endorsement.” Bacon is suggesting that prosperity and adversity are not random weather systems. They are rival pedagogies.

The subtext is painfully practical. Bacon lived in a world where fortunes were volatile, where plague, court intrigue, and sudden disgrace were part of the career ladder. (He would later be impeached for corruption and pushed from power.) So the quote works as an instrument of mental discipline: if you’re winning, don’t assume you’re virtuous; if you’re losing, don’t assume you’re cursed. Adversity becomes a kind of spiritual technology - the New Testament’s emphasis on inwardness, humility, and grace reframed as training rather than punishment.

There’s also a sly political read. Bacon, the architect of “useful” knowledge, is suspicious of comfort as a moral narcotic. Prosperity breeds entitlement, self-justifying narratives, a belief that outcomes prove worth. Adversity strips those stories down to essentials: what you can endure, what you actually believe when rewards disappear. The line endures because it offers a counter-metric to status: not “What did you get?” but “What did it make of you?”
