Life & Wisdom Quote by Stendhal

"Prudery is a kind of avarice, the worst of all"

About this Quote

Prudery, for Stendhal, isn’t innocence; it’s hoarding. The line snaps because it reframes moral stiffness as a form of appetite, not restraint. A prude doesn’t merely decline pleasure - they try to control the circulation of it, policing what can be said, desired, enjoyed. That’s where “avarice” lands: not just wanting less, but wanting to possess the terms of wanting for everyone else.

Stendhal writes in a France still negotiating the aftershocks of Revolution and Empire, then the Restoration’s anxious return to “order.” Public virtue becomes a costume, one that signals class respectability and political safety. In that climate, prudery functions as social currency: you buy belonging by appearing untempted. The subtext is cynical and very modern: sexual morality is often less about ethics than about status management.

Calling prudery “the worst of all” sins isn’t hedonist propaganda; it’s a critique of emotional miserliness. Avarice, traditionally, starves the community by locking up resources. Prudery starves it by locking up language and feeling - shrinking what can be acknowledged without shame. It also breeds hypocrisy, the shadow economy of moralism: the more aggressively a society performs purity, the more it needs scapegoats to prove it’s still pure. Stendhal’s jab hits because it treats repression as acquisitive power, not personal virtue, and because it implies a devastating trade: you don’t eliminate desire; you just monetize and weaponize it.
