Science & Tech Quote by Samuel Alexander

"Psychology is the science of the act of experiencing, and deals with the whole system of such acts as they make up mental life"

About this Quote

Alexander’s line quietly detonates a common assumption: that psychology is about “the mind” as a thing. By calling it “the science of the act of experiencing,” he pushes psychology away from treating thoughts and feelings like objects sitting in a cabinet and toward treating them as events - lived, temporal, doing-work-in-the-world occurrences. The pivot to “act” matters. Acts can be observed indirectly through their patterns, their consequences, their relations to attention and behavior. “Mind,” by contrast, invites metaphysical fog.

The subtext is a border dispute. In Alexander’s era, psychology was still negotiating its break from philosophy while also resisting reduction to physiology. His phrasing attempts a détente: keep psychology scientific, but anchor it in experience rather than in neurons alone. It’s also a strategic move against introspection’s reputation for private, uncheckable reports. If experiencing is an act, it can be studied as a system - structured, comparable, even if it remains first-person at its core.

“Whole system of such acts” gives the sentence its philosophical ambition. Mental life isn’t a pile of sensations; it’s an organized ecology: perception shaping memory, memory biasing attention, attention guiding action, action feeding back into perception. Alexander is gesturing toward a dynamic model of consciousness before “cognitive science” and “information processing” became the dominant metaphors. Psychology, here, is neither diary nor dissection. It’s an attempt to map the choreography.
