Daily Inspiration Quote by Harriet Tubman

"Quakers almost as good as colored. They call themselves friends and you can trust them every time"

About this Quote

Tubman’s compliment lands with the blunt economy of someone who measured people by outcomes, not rhetoric. “Almost as good as colored” is jarring now, but in her mouth it reads less like hierarchy than calibration: a hard-earned scale of trust in a world built to betray Black fugitives. She isn’t praising Quakers for being enlightened in the abstract; she’s noting a concrete reliability under pressure. The Underground Railroad wasn’t a metaphor. It was logistics, money, food, silence, nerve.

The line also punctures a popular modern fantasy about interracial abolitionism as a parade of moral purity. Tubman’s framing keeps whiteness on probation. Quakers “call themselves friends” sounds like she’s quoting their branding back at them, then immediately stress-testing it: “and you can trust them every time.” Friendship here isn’t intimacy; it’s operational integrity. When your life depends on a stranger’s discretion, “friend” becomes a job description.

The context matters: Quakers, with their anti-slavery testimony and dense networks in the North, often provided safe houses and practical support. Tubman’s emphasis on consistency (“every time”) reflects how exceptional dependable allies were. Most white Americans either participated in slavery, profited from it, or looked away. Even in free states, the Fugitive Slave Act turned capture into commerce and made neutrality lethal.

There’s subtexted gratitude, but also a veteran’s unsentimental judgment. Tubman isn’t handing out halos. She’s recording a field report: among the dangerous variables of escape, Quakers were one of the few you could treat as a constant.
