Physical stores live or die by geography because geography is expensive. Rent, foot traffic, parking, neighborhood demographics, visibility: all of it gets bundled into one punishing fixed cost. Bezos strips the romance out of storefront retail and reduces it to a balance-sheet problem. That's the real intent. He isn't admiring the old wisdom; he's reframing it as a vulnerability.

The subtext is classic Bezos: the internet changes the cost structure, and once the cost structure changes, the whole game changes. Amazon doesn't need a flagship corner in Manhattan to reach customers. It can bury its real estate in cheaper warehouses, optimize logistics, and turn convenience into a software problem instead of a landlord problem. "Location" stops meaning where the store sits and starts meaning how fast the network moves.

Context matters here. Bezos came of age in the era when e-commerce was still being dismissed as an inferior substitute for "real" retail. Remarks like this helped reverse that hierarchy. They implied that physical retail's supposed strength, its presence in the world, was also its structural weakness. That is a very Bezos move: take an entrenched business truth, accept it completely, then use it to argue that the future belongs to the model that escapes it. The sentence is casual. The worldview behind it is ruthless.
