"Remember that you are needed. There is at least one important work to be done that will not be done unless you do it"
About this Quote
The subtext is theological but not preachy. As a clergyman, Allen is speaking from a moral universe where vocation isn’t primarily career branding, it’s obligation: the idea that each person is placed amid particular needs, and that neglect has real consequence. “Needed” is the hinge word. It shifts the focus from self-esteem to service, from “you are special” to “you are accountable.” That’s why the second sentence lands. He doesn’t claim there are many tasks only you can do. He claims there is at least one - modest, plausible, and therefore hard to dodge.
The phrasing also narrows the excuse-space. “Important work” sounds deliberately unspecific, letting the listener supply their own neglected call: a conversation they’re avoiding, a duty they keep delegating, a talent they’ve kept private. The final clause - “will not be done unless you do it” - is a moral deadline without a date, a reminder that passivity is still a choice. In pastoral context, it’s comfort with teeth: you matter, so act like it.
