Life & Mortality Quote by Steve Jobs

"Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. You are already naked. There is no reason not to follow your heart"

About this Quote

Jobs reaches for mortality the way other CEOs reach for quarterly reports: as a ruthless clarifier. The line isn’t comfort; it’s a cognitive hack. By dragging death into the room, he vaporizes the ordinary bureaucratic excuses that keep people obedient - reputation management, status anxiety, the slow addiction to being “reasonable.” “You are already naked” is deliberately abrasive. It strips the listener of the fantasy that there’s a protected version of the self that can fail safely later. If you’re going to end up exposed anyway, why keep negotiating with your own fear?

The subtext is classic Jobs: romantic anti-conformity, packaged as practical advice. He doesn’t argue for “balance” or incremental risk; he argues for audacity with a startup founder’s moral certainty. “There is no reason not to follow your heart” lands because it pretends to be universal while quietly assuming a particular kind of audience: people with enough runway to treat risk as a choice, not a catastrophe. That tension is part of its cultural power and its blind spot.

Context matters. Delivered in his 2005 Stanford commencement address, after a cancer diagnosis and amid Apple’s second act, it’s both confession and brand myth-making. Jobs frames his own life as proof that intuition beats credentialism, that getting fired can be “the best thing,” that loss is survivable if you interpret it correctly. It’s motivational, but it’s also a recruitment pitch for a worldview: build, bet, ship - and don’t let the fear of looking foolish become your manager.
