Creativity Quote by Jonny Greenwood

"Right now my mind is on the people who stole our instruments, and, specifically, the person with my guitar, which will no doubt end its days having Green Day songs worked out on it. A better fate was deserved - and while the reverence given to guitars annoys me, I shall miss it"

About this Quote

Greenwood’s grief arrives sideways, disguised as a joke with teeth. Instead of melodrama about violation or loss, he fixates on a petty, exquisitely musician-brained nightmare: his guitar living out its afterlife as someone else’s cover-band workhorse, “Green Day songs worked out on it.” The dig isn’t really about Green Day. It’s a way to name the horror of artistic intimacy being repurposed into something generic, the same fear writers have about their notebooks becoming grocery lists.

The line “A better fate was deserved” is mock-heroic, elevating a stolen object into a character in a tragedy. Then he undercuts himself: “the reverence given to guitars annoys me.” That’s Greenwood keeping his cool-kid posture intact, swatting away the rock-god mythos even as he admits he’s attached. It’s a classic self-policing move from an artist whose brand is precision and restraint: show feeling, then immediately ironize it.

What makes the quote work is the tug-of-war between anti-sentimentality and genuine mourning. The theft is literal, but the deeper theft is of a relationship: muscle memory, touch, the private history embedded in an instrument that’s been sweated over onstage and fussed with in quiet rooms. “I shall miss it” lands because it’s so plain after all that armor. He can’t stop himself from caring; he can only control how he confesses it.
