The phrasing is doing quiet doctrinal work. "In which we sail" folds the community into a single vessel, a Reformation-era reminder that faith is not a private wellness practice but a collective passage. "Never allow us to perish even in the midst of shipwrecks" is the sharp edge: Calvin isn't promising smooth water. He grants catastrophe, then denies it finality. Shipwrecks can happen; perishing cannot. That's not optimism so much as providence, the Calvinist insistence that events are real, brutal, and still subordinated to a will outside our control.

The subtext is pastoral and polemical at once. Calvin writes amid exile, religious war, plague, and political instability; "weariness" reads like spiritual fatigue as much as physical exhaustion. He is coaching believers to interpret terror as a theological category error: fear assumes the world is unpiloted. The intent is less to soothe than to discipline perception, turning suffering from evidence of abandonment into proof that faith isn't a fair-weather theory.
