Creativity Quote by Robert Delaunay

"Simultaneity in light is harmony, the rhythm of colors which creates the Vision of Man"

About this Quote

Simultaneity is Delaunay’s way of turning modern life into a perceptual engine: not a single, stable scene, but multiple sensations arriving at once and somehow locking into order. Calling it “harmony” is a provocation. He’s borrowing the authority of music to legitimize a visual avant-garde move, insisting that color can behave like sound - structured, rhythmic, and capable of producing something larger than the sum of its parts.

The phrase “rhythm of colors” points straight at his Orphism and the long argument he was having with Cubism. Where analytic Cubism often drained the world into browns and grays to prioritize form and intellect, Delaunay re-inflated the eye with pure chromatic force. “Simultaneity” also nods to contemporary science: Chevreul’s color contrast theories, new electric lighting, the flicker of city signage, the way industrial Paris and its technologies recalibrated vision. He isn’t painting objects so much as the conditions of seeing in a machine-age metropolis.

Then he makes the big claim: this creates the “Vision of Man.” Not “my vision,” not “a vision,” but a human-scale perceptual identity. The subtext is almost utopian: modernity may fragment experience, but art can synthesize it into coherence. Delaunay’s confidence borders on manifesto; he’s positioning the painter as an engineer of consciousness, using color relations to build a new kind of subject who can keep pace with the speed, glare, and simultaneity of the 20th century.
