War & Peace Quote by Anthony Trollope

"Since woman's rights have come up, a young woman is better able to fight her own battle"

About this Quote

A Victorian gentleman trying, carefully, to sound modern: Trollope’s line carries the polite shock of a door being opened an inch, then held there. The phrasing matters. “Since woman’s rights have come up” treats the movement less as a moral crisis than as an item on the agenda, a topic newly permissible in drawing-room conversation. It’s slyly distancing: rights aren’t declared; they’ve “come up,” as if floated by the weather or gossip.

Then comes the pivot, and the real provocation: “a young woman is better able to fight her own battle.” Trollope isn’t offering radical equality so much as revising the script of protection. Victorian culture cast women as defended, represented, spoken for. “Fight” yanks them out of that sentimental pose and drops them into conflict and agency, but “her own battle” also narrows the claim. He’s not promising that institutions will change; he’s suggesting women can now compete within the existing rules, with less paternal mediation.

The adjective “young” is doing a lot of ideological work. It nods to generational shift (the new woman, the new century) while implying that self-advocacy is easiest when a woman is unencumbered by marriage, children, or reputational constraints. Trollope’s realism often lives in these compromises: sympathy that stops short of revolution, progress framed as personal competence rather than collective restructuring.

The subtext is both encouraging and limiting: yes, speak for yourself; no, don’t ask society to remake itself on your behalf. That tension is exactly why the line still stings.
