By contrast, “a simple song” is the modern abstraction: a melody detached from the situation that generated it, ready to be owned, not shared.

The line works because it reverses a common assumption that complexity equals sophistication, and sophistication equals later cultural development. Kodaly argues the opposite: the older form is more complex precisely because it bundles multiple kinds of coordination at once - voice, gesture, timing, shared attention, group identity. A “simple song” can be aesthetically refined, but it asks less of the human system; it can be consumed alone.

Context matters. Kodaly, a Hungarian composer and foundational music educator, was building an argument for folk tradition and for pedagogy that starts with embodied, communal music-making. Underneath is a nationalist-modernist tension: preserve living culture without freezing it into museum repertoire. He’s also diagnosing what modernity does to art: it isolates, professionalizes, and sells back to us what used to be a shared human practice.
