The subtext is also a shot at moral outsourcing: people who talk about “necessary” purges and “historic” inevitabilities as if history is a screenplay and they’re not in the cast.

It works because it’s contemptuous without being abstract. Orwell doesn’t say left-wing thought is dangerous; he says some of its practitioners are unserious about danger. That’s a far sharper indictment - and harder to dismiss.
