"So, what you can do in Microsoft Word is what Bill Gates has decided. What you can do in Oracle Database is what Larry Ellison and his crew have decided"
About this Quote
Nelson has always been allergic to closed systems. As an early hypertext visionary (and a perpetual critic of computing’s mainstream detours), he watched the industry consolidate around monolithic, corporate-authored platforms. His intent here is to strip away the myth that tools are merely tools. The subtext is about agency: every template, default setting, file format, and “can’t do that” error message is a decision made upstream by someone with incentives that are not yours. Standards become strategy; compatibility becomes captivity.
The quote works because it’s bluntly personal. He names Gates and Ellison not to demonize individuals, but to re-humanize the source of authority. These aren’t laws of nature. They’re choices made in boardrooms, translated into menus, and enforced by proprietary formats and enterprise lock-in. Even creativity gets routed through a narrow corridor of sanctioned actions: you can write, calculate, query, present - but only along the paths the platform owners paved.
Nelson’s cynicism is also a challenge. If software is a set of decisions imposed at scale, the democratic question isn’t “What can my computer do?” It’s “Who gets to decide what I’m allowed to do with it?”
