"Social psychology is especially interested in the effect which the social group has in the determination of the experience and conduct of the individual member"
About this Quote
The phrasing does a lot of work. “Determination” has a faintly scientific chill, pushing against the romantic notion of an authentic inner core. “Experience and conduct” pairs the private and the visible, insisting that feelings and actions are braided together by shared symbols, expectations, and language. And “member” is a pointed noun: you don’t just live near society, you belong to it. That word makes individuality sound less like sovereignty and more like citizenship in a constantly negotiated order.
Context matters. Mead is writing at the turn of the 20th century, when industrial cities, mass media, and bureaucratic institutions were reorganizing daily life. Early social psychology was jostling with older moral and biological explanations of behavior. Mead, a pragmatist and a foundational figure for symbolic interactionism, aims to relocate the origins of mind and self in interaction: the “I” and “me” emerging through role-taking and the internalized “generalized other.”
Subtext: if you want to understand a person, don’t ask only what they want. Ask what worlds are talking through them.
