Newton’s line lands like a paradox because it is one: the dream of disarmament voiced through the language of armament. It’s not a love-letter to violence; it’s a diagnosis of power. In the America Newton was organizing in, “getting rid of the gun” didn’t mean eliminating weapons in the abstract. It meant ending the constant, one-sided threat of force aimed at Black communities by police, vigilantes, and the state. If one side holds the gun, the other side is living inside its muzzle.

The intent is strategic and brutally practical. Newton is arguing that moral appeals alone don’t disarm an opponent who benefits from being armed.
